Originalement conçu comme un prototype pour paravent grandeur nature, cette composition en cinq panneaux est devenue un paravent miniature décoratif. Il a été inspiré par un véritable shunga (estampe érotique japonaise) de l’école Utagawa publié dans les années 1840, avec la particularité d’être un shikake-e : à la fois estampe pliable et jeu, les femmes représentées possédaient une fente dans le papier au niveau de leurs parties intimes, où le pénis en érection d’une figure de papier séparée, imprimée pour représenter un homme, pouvait être inséré par le joueur.

La figure de l’homme a été ici remplacée par la présence d’un oni (démon/ogre du folklore japonais) bleu, dont les multiples pénis aux allures de serpent sont un clin d’œil tant aux shunga traditionnels dépeignant des scènes surnaturelles qu’aux plus modernes hentai dont ils sont les ancêtres.

At first intended as a prototype for a human-sized screen, this composition in five little panels ended-up as a little decorative screen. It was inspired by a real shunga (japanese erotic woodblock print) by an artist of the Utagawa school issued c.1840’s, its particularity being a shikake-e : a kind of folding print that was also a game, the women depicted in it having cuts in the paper in the place of their intimate parts, where the erect penis of a additional cut-out print of a man could be inserted by the player.

The man figure was here replaced by that of a blue oni (demon/ogre from the japanese folklore), whose multiple snake-like penises are a nod both to traditional supernatural shunga and to their legacy, the more modern hentai.
