La période Edo au Japon a vu la naissance, l’âge d’or puis le déclin des oiran. Courtisanes de très haut rang, bien au-dessus de la prostituée commune, leur raffinement, leur culture et leurs manières empruntent celles de la noblesse, et leurs services sont à la fois extrêmement exclusifs et coûteux ; artistes avant tout, versées dans les arts traditionnels, les oiran de plus haut rang excluent même toute forme de prestation sexuelle. Rêves d’une ère révolue, lentement remplacées au cours du temps par les geisha plus à la mode, bon marché et vivant avec leur temps, les oiran deviennent peu à peu une relique du passé.

Insouciante, ignorant tout de ce que le futur réserve à sa profession, cette oiran danse dans ses atours richement colorés, dont chaque pan de tissu est peint à la main afin de reproduire un motif différent de papier origami, rendant un hommage silencieux à son art oublié.

The Edo period in Japan saw the rise, the golden age and finally the decline of the oiran. Highest-ranking courtesan, way above the common prostitutes, their refinement, culture and manners mirrored those of the nobility and their services were both extremely exclusive and expensive. Entertainers well versed in the traditional arts first and foremost, the highest-ranking of oiran did not even engage in sexual services at all. Dreams of a bygone era slowly replaced by the more fashionable, affordable and up-to-date geisha, the oiran gradually became a relic of the past.

Carefree and ignorant of what the future will bring to her profession, this oiran is dancing in her brightly coloured attire, each fabric panel hand-painted to reproduce a different pattern of origami paper, paying a silent tribute to her forgotten art.
